How to Get Rid of Writers Block – 15 Tips to Overcome Writer’s Block

Are you facing a writer’s block? Have you tried everything and it hasn’t worked? Don’t worry – it happens to almost everyone at least once when they are in the middle of writing something that they are very passionate about. You will often tell yourself stuff like “I can’t proceed. I don’t know what else to write”. Internet is full of writer’s block meme but to those who are stuck with a writer’s block, it’s no joke.

Now surely there can never be a topic under the sun on which you have written just about everything. So, ask yourself whether you have done sufficient research. Find out if you have started to lose interest in the topic. In the event you still don’t feel you have been able to overcome your writer’s block, here are 15 ways which you can follow so that you can get back on track with your writing.

1. Do something else for a while

You may be writing at a stretch for too long which is why the entire exercise may have become monotonous. You need to get out of your seat and take a walk or hang out with someone or just do something else. For example, you can for a change clean the dishes, do some gardening or arrange your bed. Give your mind a little rest and that way you will have renewed interest in writing. Who knows, you might even conceive an idea while doing any these chores.

2. Read up a little

Another way of spending your time away from writing is to read up a book. Now the book may or may not have anything to do with what you’re writing. But it will re-energize your mind and make you ready for writing again. Once again, reading can definitely spark an idea in your mind.

3. Write down what you think is causing the writer’s block

It is as they say, ‘the answer is hidden in the question’, the question being ‘why can’t I write anymore’. Write whatever comes to your mind on a blank paper, as it will help you relieve your stress. Once you realize your problem, you can deal with it better.

4. Physical exercise to overcome writer’s block

It is proven scientifically that exercising leads to the release of a lot of endorphins which can stimulate cognitive abilities and your memory center. Go for a run or do some jump roping. You will feel a lot more active than before and you will able to concentrate a lot better.

5. Make sure there is nothing distracting around you

If you’re in room with too many people, who are constantly talking, chances are that you will not be able to concentrate. Make sure that you’re in a room all by yourself or put on some earplugs in order to block out all the noise.

6. Listen to favorite songs

Listening to songs is always the best way to relieve some stress and feel less anxious. Studies have pointed out that music can help to improve productivity and get rid of writer’s block.

7. Fix a schedule for writing

It cannot be that you are capable of writing something wonderful almost every hour of the day. You must reserve a specific segment of the day so that you do nothing but write during that time. It will also help you concentrate better since everyone knows not to disturb you then. Making a schedule can really help you overcome your writer’s block since you won’t procrastinate and you know that this is the time you must try to create something.

8. Read it to yourself or someone else

Reading the text to yourself will help you realize where you exactly went wrong. It will also help you think faster since you have been listening to yourself and can imagine how to improvise. In case that doesn’t work, you should read it out to a friend or a family member, particularly someone who has some idea about what you’re writing on.

9. Set a time limit

When you’re writing with a sense of urgency, you will be pushed to think harder and that will open your mind up. One way of creating this sense of urgency is to use a stopwatch. For example, set a timer of 20 minutes during which you finish at least 500 words of what you plan to write. Create such short time stints throughout the day and before you know you will already be done with the topic.

10. Give yourself some reward

In continuation with the previous tip, set a few rewards for yourself, each time you finish your stipulated word count. Grab a drink or eat a candy after finishing the 500 words in 20 minutes. You will be motivated to finish the rest of the writing on time so that you can have more candy or soft drink or both. In case you miss the deadline, be honest to yourself and don’t give yourself a treat.

11. Watch the news

Now when I say news, I don’t mean Fox News or any channel or website that does a politician’s bidding. Lookout for independent media sites that actually know journalism and read or see their reports in their website or YouTube channel respectively. Once you come across a plethora of facts, you will have a lot to write on.

12. Indulge in a bit of freewriting

Just write whatever comes to your mind without caring about the spelling or grammar so that the feelings of doubt and apathy cease to exist. Freewriting can help you overcome writer’s block.

13. Go easy on your first draft

First drafts are rarely the final drafts and therefore it is ABSOLUTELY FINE if it is not up to your expectations. In fact, a not-so-good first draft is an opportunity for you to do better the next time. You won’t be able to overcome writer’s block if you won’t start writing unless it’s perfect.

14. Work on other details

If you are writing a story, maybe you can focus on some other aspects of it for the time being. For example, think of improvising your characters in order give them a little more depth or add few more layers to their personality.

15. Think of an alternative genre

May be a short story or an essay format is not the best way for you to express your ideas. You may have to think of another way in which you can present your ideas better, such as in the form of a poem or even prose.
